Opening a bank account in Barcelona for new students is not as hard or confusing as it seems. In this article we provide you all the information you may need to open your first bank account. The very first thing to take into account  is that there are two ways you can open a bank account, either as a resident or a non-resident.

We know how important is to open a bank Account for Students in Barcelona. If you decide to study in Spain, you will need a bank account for paying bills, contracting and registering for certain services. It is not a legal requirement and it is totally up to you whether you want to manage your finances from an overseas account or get one here. With that said, to have a bank account for students in Barcelona is very useful during your stay if you are a long-term resident in Spain, here in Barcelona you will find a wide range of banks.

Documents Required for Bank account

Non-Residents

  • To be over 18 years old
  • Valid passport
  • Proof of study (letter from school or university, student card)
  • Document proving your address in Spain
  • Proof of financial means or source of income

Residents

  • To be over 18 years old
  • Valid passport
  • Proof of study (letter from school or university, student card)
  • Document proving your address in Spain
  • NIE

In terms of benefits a resident bank is better, but it can also be a very complex process. If you don’t intend to stay in Spain for a long period of time a non resident account will do the trick, taking in mind that with this type of account you may not be allowed to have a credit card or overdraft. You can always ask in each bank what will be best for you.

Some factors to take into consideration:

Banks close early

Banks close early: their opening hours are around 8h00 till 14h00. Some of them open one day a week until around 18h00. Most of them closed on weekends.

Some banks charge fees

Some banks charge fees if you withdraw from ATMs that are not associated with them.

Language could be a barrier

Language could be a barrier since not everyone in the banks speaks English.

Choosing the right bank is certainly not an easy task. To make the process of opening a Spanish bank account as easy as possible, BarcelonaStudents has teamed up with several of the most popular banks in Barcelona.
