10 Not To Miss Events in Barcelona 

1. The 3 Kings Parade Event | January 5th

In Spanish, it is called “Día de los Reyes Magos.” This event is celebrated over two days starting from the January 5th evening.

On this day, the children of Barcelona, and Spain in general, receive gifts for Christmastime.

 

Like many children from other parts of the world, they eagerly await Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, and the same can be said on the eve of January 5, when the children leave their shoes at the door with hoping that the Three Kings will leave them gifts that they find them in the next morning.

 

Colors and delicious Kings’ Cake are the most significant appearances of that day, alongside happiness and joy. The cake is often decorated with glazed fruits that resemble the jewels on the king crown.

2. Santa Eulalia festival | February 7th to 12th

Barcelona celebrates Santa Eulalia for being the patron saint of the city since the 17th century. The event goes on all over Barcelona in enormous winter festivals moving from one place to another.

 

If you spent these days in Barcelona, you should see the “Sardana” dancing, the fireworks (Correfoc), not to mention the scene of the children and adults wearing as devils hanging around the city’s famous places.

3. Carnival in Sitges | February 20th to 26th

Sitges is right next to Barcelona, Plenty of parties and costumes take place all over the city nearly in the third week of February, on weekend nights. Try not to miss this outstanding carnival.

4. Sant Jordi Event in Barcelona | April 23rd

Catalans celebrate this fantastic tradition which was called after Saint Jordi, the protector and patron of Catalonia. This day also marks World Book Day.

People come out early in the morning to celebrate, as stalls of flowers and books are distributed all over the streets of Barcelona. The tradition dictates that rose with a grain of wheat, as a symbol of fertility, should be given to women by their lovers, while men receive a book, although there is room to mix it up as long as you show kindness and appreciation. Anyway, make sure to go for a walk to smell the roses.

5. Sonar Festival | June 18th

The fans of electronic music should not miss this masterpiece. It came into light in 1994 as a festival for electronic music.

Recently it witnessed exceptional growth showing the latest trends in dance and music by hundreds of artists, musicians and DJs.

6. Sant Joan Barcelona Event | June 23rd

The following day marks a holiday in Spain. Therefore, they go to the beach and celebrate the summer arrival with huge celebrations that include fireworks and joyful colors. Large numbers mobilize to drink in the street in a tradition called “botellon” and dance at “chiringuitos” (beach-side bars).

7. Mayor de Gràcia Festival | August 15th

The city of Gracia turns into some fantasy world exploding with fun, excitement, colors and fireworks. Many streets are decorated with arts, giant flowers, gratifies, live music, street food and parties which go on all night.

8. Della Mercè Festival | September

It takes place late in September. It is fair to say that it is the most important event in September. The city celebrates its patron saint, the Virgin of Grace (Mare de Déu de la Mercè), as it is believed that she saved the city from the plague in 1687.

 

They honor her with the presence of musical concerts, colored fireworks, food and drink and parades. Here is the best chance to get the craziest free street entertainment ever.

9. Semana Santa Event | On the Holy Week

It is the Spanish celebration for Holy Week that leads up to Easter that represents the story of the Passion of Christ. You are lucky if you got the chance to spend Easter in Barcelona. It is one of the most breathtaking celebrations in the city.

10. Barcelona New Year’s Eve Event | 31 December

It is unique and exciting to celebrate the New Year in Barcelona, the city of arts and modernity. It is the primary event in the city and all over Spain. Crowds gather at Poble Espanyol to watch the fireworks and the light show.
